This section will only use the Format Cells option to protect cells in the Product column, not the entire dataset.

Steps:

  • Click on the triangle symbol at the top left corner to select the entire sheet. Next, go to the home tab >> cells group >> Dropdown >> format cells option
  • The Format cells dialogue will then appear.
  • Click on Security. Uncheck the Locked option, then choose OK.
  • We will repeat the process for any cells we wish to lock.
  • Click on the Product column cells and then click on the Home Tab >> Cells Group >> Format dropdown >> Format Cells Option.
  • The Format cells dialogue will then appear once more.
  • Click on Security to check the Locked option and then choose OK.

  • Enter the password again and hit OK.
  • If you try to modify any cell of the Product column, you will receive an error message.

Method-2 Using Allow Edit Ranges Option for Excel to Protect Cells without Protecting Sheet

We will use the Allow edit Ranges option here to protect cells in the Product column, but not the rest of this sheet.

Steps:

  • Go to the Review Tab >> ProtectGroup Allow Edit Ranges Option
  • The Allow users to Edit Ranges Dialog box will then open.
  • Choose the New Option.
  • You will then be taken to the New Range dialogue.
  • Select Range1 in the Title box or another name you prefer, and then type C4:D11 into the Refers cells box. Press OK.
  • After that, the Allow users to Edit Ranges dialogue will be displayed again.
  • Click on Use.
  • Select the Protect sheet option again.
  • The Protect sheet wizard will then appear.
  • Enter the password and hit OK.
  • Enter your password again and hit OK
  • You will receive an error message if you try to change any cell’s Product column values.

Method-3 Using a VBA Code To Protect Cells Without Protecting Sheets

Method-3 Using a VBA Code To Protect Cells Without Protecting Sheets

A VBA code will protect this section. It covers the cells used for but not the entire sheet.

Steps:

  • Right-Click the name of the sheet.
  • Select the View code option.
  • You will then be taken to the Visual Basic Editor window.
  • In the code window, type the following code.
    Sub Worksheet_SelectionChange(ByVal specific_cell As Range) If specific_cell.Column = 2 Then If specific_cell.Row = 6 Or specific_cell.Row = 9 Then Cells(specific_cell.Row, specific_cell.Column).Offset(0, 3).Select End If End If End Sub
  • This code will execute only if we select any cell, so we have defined the Procedure as Worksheet_SelectionChange, Worksheet is the Object, and SelectionChange is the Procedure.
  • Two IF-THEN statements are used to define the cells in Column
