It follows a man named Mark (played by Andrew Lincoln) who is trying to get over his love for his best friend, Juliet (played by Keira Knightley). He meets and falls in love with Juliet’s sister, Mia. There’s also an ensemble cast that has many different people falling in and out of love. The movie was directed by Richard Curtis and it stars Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, and Liam Neeson.
The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
The Phantom of the Opera is one of the best movies on this list and was released on November 22nd, 2004. This movie is based on a musical of the same name and was written and composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Charles Hart. It follows Christine Daae (played by Emmy Rossum) who has a beautiful voice and is loved by the young Vicomte Raoul de Chagny. They start to fall in love, but things take a turn for the worst when Christine meets the Phantom of the Opera. The Phantom loves Christine too, so he makes it his mission to keep her all to himself.
The Bridges of Madison County (1995)
The Bridges of Madison County is definitely one that’s on many people’s lists as being one of their favorites. It was written by Robert James Waller and released on December 21st, 1995. The movie follows Francesca Johnson (Meryl Streep), an Italian immigrant who is married with children and lives on a farm in Iowa with her husband. She meets Robert Kincaid (played by Clint Eastwood) who is an Iowa photographer that stops to take pictures in her house. They start a passionate romance together, but they know that it’s only meant to be for the weekend. The movie was directed by Clint Eastwood and also stars Amy Adams, Victor Slezak, and Michael Edwards. Source.
West Side Story (1961)
West Side Story is one of those musicals that are loved all around the world. It was released on October 18th, 1961, and is based on William Shakespeare’s play Romeo & Juliette. It follows two rival gangs from New York City: the Sharks and the Jets. There’s a lot of romance between Tony (played by Richard Beymer) and Maria (played by Natalie Wood) who are both from opposite gangs but love each other deeply. The movie stars George Chakiris, Rita Moreno, and Russ Tamblyn.
Titanic is one of those romantic movies that make you wonder “What if?” This historic love story follows two people who meet on the ill-fated Titanic ship. Rose DeWitt Bukater (played by Kate Winslet) meets Jack Dawson (played by Leonardo DiCaprio). They fall in love, but they know that their differences could result in disaster for them. They have to figure out whether to fight for their love or let it go somewhere else. This movie was directed by James Cameron and has won 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
The Fault in Our Stars (2014)
The Fault in Our Stars is another popular movie that has recently come out. It was directed by Josh Boone and released on June 6th, 2014. The movie follows Hazel Grace Lancaster (played by Shailene Woodley) who has cancer but goes to a support group where she meets Augustus Waters (played by Ansel Elgort). They start to develop feelings for each other and it starts to bring them both happiness in their lives after they’ve gone through so much. The movie was adapted from the book of the same name written by John Green.
A Walk to Remember (2002)
A Walk to Remember is one that many people have seen, but not everyone’s heard of before. This movie is based on a book written by Nicholas Sparks and was directed by Adam Shankman. It follows Jamie Sullivan (played by Mandy Moore) who is the preacher’s daughter in her town. She starts to fall in love with Landon Carter (played by Shane West) who is one of the most popular students in school. He’s a heartbreaker, but she tries to change him for good even though they have their differences. This movie has an ensemble cast that includes Daryl Hannah, Peter Coyote, and Eric Close.
Serendipity is another movie that not everyone has seen before, but is definitely worth watching if you haven’t already seen it! The movie was directed by Peter Chelsom and released on December 25th, 2001. It follows Jonathan Trager (played by John Cusack) who has an experience with love early in his life but then meets Sara Thomas (played by Kate Beckinsale) who he falls head over heels for at first sight. They try to find each other again after they part ways and it’s not easy for them to do so because of all of the twists and turns that their relationship goes through.
P.S. I Love You (2007)
P.S. I Love You is another film directed by Richard LaGravenese but stars Hilary Swank, Gerard Butler and Lisa Kudrow. The movie follows the character of Holly Kennedy (played by Swank) who is grieving over the loss of her husband in a really tough way. He dies in an accident and sent his wife a letter where he told her things that he wants for her to do once she’s read the letter. Her life starts to turn around because of this letter, especially when she meets a man at one of these events who might be able to bring happiness into her life again!
Love Story (1970)
Love Story is another classic film that many people have seen before. It stars Ryan O’Neal and Ali MacGraw as Oliver Barrett IV and Jenny Cavalleri respectively. Oliver goes through a lot when it comes to love because he falls hard for Jenny who comes from a different background than him. They spend time together and he falls head over heels for her, but then they start going to school at Harvard University where Oliver’s father is a dean. It doesn’t play out the way that anyone expected it to go because of their backgrounds and how their parents don’t approve of the relationship either.
