7 Best Japanese High School Movies to Watch Right Now

Japanese high school movies are a staple of Japanese culture. There are many different genres, but romantic comedies and Japanese horror films seem to be the most popular. If you’re looking for something new to watch this weekend, we’ve compiled a list of 11 Japanese high school based movies that are worth your time.

What Movies in it for You?

From Me to You (2010)

Japanese high school-based movie From Me to You (2010)

You might not have heard of the 2010 Japanese movie “From Me to You”, but it is one that should be on your radar. The film follows a high school girl who falls in love with her teacher and his fiancé becomes an obstacle for their relationship.

A brilliantly written screenplay by Yuki Tanada has brought this story to life as well as tugged at many heartstrings throughout its duration.

The storyline is compelling and touching enough in itself so there’s no need for any gratuitous sex scenes or violence which would detract from the tender emotions between Haru (Mizuho Yoshida) and Tamaoki (Kazunari Ninomiya). It’s safe to say that some people will find it hard to resist getting emotional during the screening.

The film is directed by Ryuta Tasaki who also has written several josei films and TV dramas, so you can expect an authentic portrayal of emotions with this work.

Japanese high school movies are often about romance which might not be for everyone, but there’s nothing like a good love story when it all works out in the end! This movie delivers on that sentiment without fail as well as showing how life doesn’t pan out perfectly every single time.

The realism combined with its heartwarming qualities makes “From Me to You” one of my favourite Japanese films involving Japanese high school students so far!

 One Week Friends (2017)

Japanese high school-based love movie -  One Week Friends (2017)

One Week Friends is a Japanese high school love movie that tells the story of two friends who are both chronically ill and have been quarantined by one another for seven years. The film has won awards in Japan, including Best Film at the 48th Blue Ribbon Awards and was nominated for Best Japanese Movie by Mainichi Film Award. This drama-based Japanese high school movie takes place over the course of one week where they reunite with each other to build a new friendship before fighting against an illness together.

It’s hard not to get emotional while watching this Japanese high school love movie as it can be difficult to watch your loved ones suffer due to their illnesses but we also see how much closer these two people become before the end of their lives.

One Week Friends is a Japanese high school love movie that I would recommend for any Japanese high school students who enjoy drama-based movies about friendship and overcoming obstacles together.

It’s an emotional story but it also has comedy moments to help lighten up some of the darker scenes in this Japanese high school movie which makes it perfect for anyone in various moods throughout watching this film! This Japanese High School Love Movie will make you laugh, cry, and feel connected with these characters as they go through their journey together while dealing with illnesses!

Haru Matsu Bokura

Haru Matsu Bokura is one of the most popular Japanese high school love movies ever. It’s about a group of friends who are all too smart and end up being in the same class for their final year at Japanese High School. The story revolves around two people, Yusuke Kitagawa and Yukari Sakuragi.

They’re both classmates but they don’t have any classes together because he’s in Honors while she’s just an average student- even though she probably could’ve been admitted into his advanced level course if her grades were better! As time goes on, these high schoolers start to fall in love with each other… But it seems that this Japanese high school comedy movie won’t be resolved with a happy ending!

Orange (2015)

“Orange” is a Japanese high school movie based on the manga by Ichigo Takano. It follows Naho, who receives letters from her future self about what will happen in the next few months of her life. The letter warns that disaster would strike and asks for help to prevent it from happening. Along with friends Kakeru and Shima, they try their best to save everyone while uncovering secrets behind the “disaster.”

This movie is about love and how it changes as people get older. It happens when they are in the middle of chaos. I didn’t really like these Japanese movies at first because there were too many characters being introduced one after another without any introduction or background information given, but eventually, I got used to it and I learned to love this Japanese high school movie.

The characters were also interesting. Kakeru is a very jolly, happy-go-lucky guy who has been in and out of relationships because he’s scared that if the girl knows his past she’ll leave him again. Shima is smart but too shy to show her true nature until later on when she starts opening up more with Naho after they became friends. She was my favourite character as well!

I would recommend this Japanese high school movie for those looking for something lighthearted and fun which doesn’t take itself seriously most of the time (except for some parts). These Japanese high school movies will not disappoint you at all!

Wolf Girl and Black Prince (2016)

Wolf Girl and Black Prince is a Japanese Anime movie, directed by Mamoru Hosoda. The story revolves around the character of Ame-chan who can transform into a wolf at night time. One day she meets Kazuhito Harumi, who’s never seen before in her school and he doesn’t know anything about wolves or even realizes that Ame-chan is one.

He may not be aware but he has an animal magnetism to him that attracts animals including his pet cat Bento. For some reason more than just being nice to her classmates for no good reason make it seem like they’re interested in him as well?

Ame-chan falls for this mysterious boy with a gentle personality after spending so much time together. When Ame-chan is in wolf form, she cannot speak human language and so Kazuhito must communicate with her through Bento.

Blue Spring Ride (2014)

Blue Spring Ride is one of the best Japanese high school movies to watch.

The movie is about a girl who starts at her new high school and eventually falls in love with another student there, along the way she must also deal with bullying and peer pressure.

This Japanese high school romance comedy drama film was directed by Keiichi Sato and stars Kou Shibasaki as Futaba Yoshioka, Ryo Nishikido as Shun Matsuoka, Yuma Yamoto as Kakeru Naruse, Tsubasa Honda as Sayaka Nitta-Shimada and Takumi Kitamura as Yoshiharu Kanehira. It features an original soundtrack composed by Kazuyuki Okitsu which won him accolades from various award shows.

The Japanese high school movie is a heartwarming romance that tackles the themes of bullying and peer pressure, with an underlying message about not giving up on your dreams. It also has some really funny moments as well which are so fun to watch.

  Love.Com: The Movie (2006)

As the title suggests, this is a love story. The film follows Yuki as he falls in love with transfer student Aya and begins to date her. He soon discovers that she has a boyfriend named Shoji who is possessive of her. In order to protect his new girlfriend from harm, Yuki must find out all he can about Shoji’s nasty past before it leads him into even more dangerous territory.

This film will introduce you to Japanese high school relationships and drama through one set of eyes and give you some insight into how these types of stories traditionally play out in Japan.

In Japanese high schools, physical contact between students is forbidden. Love scenes are typically shot in a very suggestive way and the camera pans away from any intimate parts of the body (usually focusing instead on something else).

Finally, relationships at school often begin as friendships before blossoming into more serious ones outside of school hours. This film follows these conventions while also playing to what many Japanese audiences enjoy about this genre: interesting twists and unpredictable turns that keep you guessing until the end.

The best Japanese high school movies are those that depict the highs and lows of life as a student. Whether it’s dealing with bullies, friendships, or complicated relationships, these films have captured what it means to be in high school all over the world for decades.
