7 Best Football Movies on Netflix to watch right now!

07/11/2021

We all have that one friend who is a diehard football fan. I’m pretty sure they’re easy to spot too- just look for the person with orange and green paint on their face, wearing an oversized jersey of their favorite team. If you or someone you know has this kind of personality, then this blog post is perfect for them! In case they want to watch some football movies on Netflix while they wait for the season to start- we put together a list of the 7 best ones on Netflix right now.

Here are the 7 Must Watch Football Movies on Netflix in 2021

1. Game of their Lives (2005)

The story is about a ragtag group of American soccer players who upset the odds at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. Just before kickoff, these six men are presented with an opportunity to give something back to their country- it’s called the USA vs England football match and they get 6 tickets to go watch.

This is one of those American football movies on Netflix that are worth watching, even if you’re not really into the sport. It’s about family, friendships, betrayal, and redemption- all things you can relate to in any field! There are also lots of subplots with women along the way which I think gives this movie an additional gripping factor for viewers.

2. Invincible (2006)

If you’re looking for a football movie on Netflix that has everything- drama, action, sports, and an inspirational tale to go with it, then Invincible is the one you should watch. It’s about Vince Papale, who went from being a bartender to playing as a placekicker in the NFL at age 30 after his wife left him just before he attempted this impossible feat.

This film shows Americans what they can achieve when they have faith in themselves and are willing to take huge risks- just like papale did! There were times I had tears in my eyes while watching the fast-paced story of Papale’s. To be able to pull off something like this, you’ll need to watch it too!

3. The Damned United (2009)

This is a 2009 British sports film that loosely adapts the novel “The Damned United“, an account of Brian Clough’s ill-fated tenure as manager of Leeds United football club in 1974. It starts with an interesting quote, which any football fan will recognize: “Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I can assure them it is much more serious than that .” And that sums up the story pretty well actually!

The storyline involves all kinds of drama onscreen- players who are being treated differently by their coach, teammates, wives/girlfriends- you name it. This definitely one of those football movies on Netflix that diehard fans will love!

4. The Waterboy (1998)

Did you know the first script for this movie was rejected by Disney? Yes, it was a total disaster- but don’t worry because it got better after Universal Pictures got their hands on it! I’m sure all you waterboy fans out there will agree with me when I say that Adam Sandler’s charisma as Bobby Boucher is what makes this 1998 classic worth watching.

For those who haven’t watched this American football comedy, the story involves a college student, played by Sandler, who finds his calling as a good old-fashioned water boy. He finds himself doing everything he can to protect his favorite player from anything that is thrown at him- even when they’re on the other side of the field!

5. Any Given Sunday (1999)

Oliver Stone’s American football drama “Any Given Sunday” has a star-studded cast including Al Pacino, Cameron Diaz, and Jamie Foxx amongst others. It follows a fictional professional American football team in their quest for glory over an entire season, without taking itself too seriously. This one’s definitely worth watching if you want to see some really dramatic scenes along with your favorite sport!

6. The Longest Yard (2005)

I think most people would agree with me when I say that this 2005 remake rocks way more than the original 1974 version! That’s because Adam Sandler is in his element playing Paul ‘Wrecking’ Crewe, who leads a group of ex-football players charged with fixing up an American Football field. While they’re at it, they decide to play against the prison guards under the guidance of Coach Nate Scarborough (played by Burt Reynolds).

The game itself provides plenty of laughs, while also depicting how far these players are willing to go for a second chance at life after everything they’ve been through. This movie is definitely worth checking out, especially if you’re looking for something that has a combination of humor and action!

7. Pele: Birth of a Legend (2016)

This 2016 American biographical drama the years leading up to Pelé becoming one of the greatest football players in history. It shows us his humble beginnings as he strives to become a professional for Santos Football Club, while also having to deal with various obstacles along the way like racism and sexism.

The movie is an inspiring tale that shows off Pelé’s perseverance- something all underdogs out there can learn from!

Conclusion

Whether you’re a die-hard football fan or looking for something to watch on Saturday, these 10 best football movies will be sure not disappoint. They range from documentaries about the game we love to dramas that tackle some of the darker aspects of youth and adult life through high school and college sports. And if your team didn’t make it this year – what better way to get over it than by watching one (or all!) of these great films?
