Her (2013)


Her is a cyberpunk film about the near future. The main character, Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), is a man who writes personal correspondence for other people that are too busy to write them themselves or don’t know how to start their own letter.

His job entails listening and responding to people’s feelings on life events such as marriage proposals, births of children, deaths of relatives etc. He spends his days with artificial intelligence systems in order to maintain these relationships through written communication. However, he develops one relationship with an operating system that uses voice recognition and natural language processing capabilities called Samantha (Scarlett Johansson).

Theodore starts communicating more frequently and intimately with this AI application than any human being in his life due to its ability to understand the intent of his words and feelings.

WarGames (1983)


WarGames tells the story of a young hacker, played by Matthew Broderick who gets into cyber warfare games. In order to test his skills, he begins playing around with military computer systems and tries to break into NORAD’s most sensitive data system.

The main character is Leo who can’t speak due to his disability yet he has awesome skills in hacking so they call him “mute”. He lost his parents at a young age and lives with his girlfriend Naadirah whom he’s attracted to as well as her brother Khalid (a Muslim). After finding some troubling information about what’s happening in Berlin, Leo sets out for Germany where all hell breaks loose when a megalomaniac cyber-scientist is taken over by a hyper technological terrorist group.

Snowpiercer (2014)


The film is set on a futuristic ice-bound Earth. A terrible event has left the world frozen and covered, with only one continent inhabited by humanity who survived on its own resources for over 20 years. To keep things running smoothly there are two very different classes of people: The oppressors live at the front carriages while everyone else lives in squalid conditions towards the back of the train that never stops moving from day to day.
